I was a music major at OU in the 1990s. Dr. Butler was my professor in a couple classes there. But beyond and above that he was a mentor and friend to me. I frequented his office daily and sat with him for hours telling him about my frustrations both personal and school related. He always welcomed me, always encouraged me , always listening with patience. He never once turned me away, and God knows he was very busy. I didn't realize it as much then, but looking back he kept my sanity. As my computer skills grew, I was able to reciprocate in a way by saving his computer from complete disaster a few times. Here I am three years later in 2021 and now I realize he passed. R.I. P Dr. Butler and thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you did for me. Anastasios

To Kenneth Butler, I Vivian Johnson- Alford; along with the Johnson family, will always remember him (Sonny Boy") and you all as the family that lived across the street in the trailer, and that we had so much in common living on "Luke Street. “It is my sincere prayer that you all be encouraged, and look unto the hills from which cometh your strength." As we all will cherish Sonny’s character, and love for his parents, siblings, students, and neighborhood friends. His legacy will be missed, but kept and cherished in our heart. Vivian A. Dear Dr Butler,
This came really suddenly. I do find it really difficult to accept this. :(
I was so glad to have found you through Facebook. You never failed to leave me encouraging notes just like you always do when I was a student in OU.
I always remember my 1st Music History module with you in OU. When you knew that I was a music history Major, you gave me a music history philosophy book that I kept it till today.
Thank you Dr Butler, and rest in peace. I will miss you dearly.

So saddened to learn of Milton's passing. While I did not have him as a teacher at Ohio University, I got to know him while serving on the Society of Alumni & Friends Board of Directors. I got to know him as a warm and decent human being and an outstanding music educator. He will truly be missed!
