Barbara Joyce (Holcombe) Fisher

January 26, 1932 ~ August 11, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old


Barbara Holcombe Fisher, longtime resident of Liberty, Texas, went to be with our Lord on Friday, August 11, 2017. Barbara was born on January 26, 1932, in Gilmer, Texas, the only child to her loving parents, Floyd Raymond Holcombe and Mary Latham Holcombe. She graduated from Gladewater High School in 1948. She attended Baylor University and soon, through mutual good friends, Sally and Nadine Woods, met the love of her life, Charles W. Fisher, Jr.  They were married on December 23, 1952, and for 52 years enjoyed a marriage of love and dedication.Barbara returned to university and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 from Lamar University and received her Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin University in 1976.  She taught in the Liberty School District for 21 years.  She shared a love of Texas history with her husband and thoroughly enjoyed teaching it to her students.  She wrote an article about the late Colonel E B. Pickett which was published in the Handbook of Texas.

Barbara was an outgoing woman who loved being with her family and friends. She was a great hostess who enjoyed entertaining and playing bridge. She delighted her children and grandchildren with her creative decorations and delicious meals on holidays and special occasions.  She has been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for over 25 years, a member and past president of the Liberty Woman’s Club, a past member and president of the Liberty Garden Club, and a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles.  To pass on her legacy of wisdom, kindness, and her beautiful nature, she is survived by her sons, Charles W. Fisher, III and David Fisher and his wife, Melody; her grandsons, Eric Fisher and his wife, Cynthia of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Jonathan Fisher of Liberty, Texas; and, her pride and source of pure joy, her great-granddaughters, Madison Fisher of Liberty, Texas and Eleanor Fisher of Terre Haute, Indiana.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Charlotte Fisher Finley of St. Hedwig, Texas, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Viewing will be on Tuesday, August 15th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Allison’s Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16th, at the First United Methodist Church with interment immediately following at the Liberty City Cemetery.
