RN Smart Passed from this life and joined his heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. He was at his home surrounded by his beloved family. Mr. Smart was born on February 3, 1937 in Liberty to Elbert James and Annie Tillman Smart.

RN was a strong and faithful Christian man who lived every day as an example of devotion to the things he believed in. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church for many years. You could always find him at church every Sunday, Wednesday, or whenever there was anything happening at church. RN led many Sunday school classes, bible studies and was a song leader for many years. For several years Mr. Smart was the leader of Jail Ministries for the Trinity River Baptist Associations. He was a charter member of Gideon International. It was clear that he was called to give his time volunteering in many different originations whenever he could.  RN was an exceptionally hard working man, always holding more than one job at a time. Mr. Smart was an inspector for TXDoT for many years until his retirement. At the same time he worked for TXDoT he was also an insurance sales rep for Germania Insurance, worked for the City of Liberty, and the WCID among other jobs along the way. RN was an incredibly handy man. There wasn’t much he couldn’t build or repair on his own.

RN was also a dedicated family man. RN met the love of his life, Sue Green, at the local five and dime store in town where she worked. It was love at first sight and the rest is history. They were married in 1960 and have been devoted to each other and the Lord together for nearly 60 years.  When he found time outside of work and church it was spent with those family and friends he loved the most. He loved to travel with his wife and children all over the country. They took many trips to national parks and other historical places. He and Sue were avid domino players and together they were pretty tough to beat.  Mr. Smart enjoyed fishing whenever he could with friends and family alike. It is without a doubt that in life his greatest treasure was his dear family. From his immediate family to his extended family he loved them all with a huge heart. Most of all he had a special place in his heart for his granddaughters and especially his three year old great grandson.  RN will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Mr. Smart was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, EJ Smart and wife, Sarah, Donald Smart, Arthur James Smart and wife, Katie; and a sister, Margaret Volkert and husband, Roy.

Those left to honor and remember RN are his beloved wife, Sue Smart; son, Keith Smart; daughter, Annise Smart McCray; granddaughters, Taylor Whitney McCray, Brooke Erin McCray; great-grandson, Parker James McCray; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be: Cody Joines, Lance Lawrence, Chuck Harris, Lester Hamlett, Terry Paschall, JL Smart, and Donavon Smart. The family would like to recognize all of the Liberty County Gideons as honorary pallbearers.
